In the Midst of: Artists Processing Grief

The artists in this exhibit made these works in the midst of grieving the death of a loved one. Art making became a way of grieving what was painful in the past, what was missed in the present, and what had been hoped for in the future. In creating pieces that share their personal losses, the artists connect with the universal experience on earth, as we mourn and long for the day when death shall be no more.

In the early months of 2015, a brain tumor robbed my mom of life. Every day a new death, we watched helplessly as the tumor took her ability to walk, then speak, then think, then, finally, her last breath. In the wake of her death, my grief and my hope held on tightly to the rope tossed out by faith in a God who did not answer my prayers for my mother’s healing, at least not in this life. I clung to Him, but, for a while, heard only silence. These paintings were a way for me to express my grief over losing my mom, but also the painful process of trading one type of faith for another.
